EDUCATION SYSTEM OF OUR NATION

This is a short post that mainly points out my views towards the education that our nation receives and their products. We all know that our education is controlled by two departments namely the department of Basic Education (DBE), which is responsible for primary and secondary schools, and the department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) which is responsible for tertiary education and vocational training. These two were divided to better the education that they offer but all we have observed is the opposite of their main goal, so now we continue asking the question of "What are they doing wrong?" so I decided to embark on a journey to see what needs to improved not only in the education system but to other sectors of the general public as-well.

One of the biggest issue that we need to look at why do people choose a career? In South Africa, particularly, there a number of accessible jobs after obtaining your matric certificate namely: Teaching, Nurse, Police, Traffic, etc. So you find people obtaining an (H) symbol and automatically you know that you be accepted in any University in the country, and the last resort is to apply for the the above mentioned fields.

Delliote conducted a survey about 5 or 6 year back which can be sited in an article written by Alyson Shontell in October 2010, she point out that about 80% of people hate their jobs and with number we can already see the damage that can be caused in the workplace. Our country we find students complaining about the teachers that stay in their offices or staff room sipping on their tea with no concern about the future of our nation that is busy gallivanting throughout their entire day. Some teachers do not even understand the concept of what they teaching in class but still they kept to teach.

In 2014 about 700 Western Cape teachers took a competency test to enhance the credibility of the National Senior Certificate Examination. The tests assesses the content knowledge of the applicant in a particular subject, their application of knowledge and skills and their marking abilities. For the past 4 years this test has been conducted in the province and yet no one has thought of test the understanding of the knowledge that the teachers pass to the student in the class? The national pass rate is decreasing as the years continue but what is being done about the the teachers that do not like their jobs? What are we as the community doing to guarantee that we can have a bright future? Last month about 200-300 pupils from Philippi High School protested demanding better classrooms and more textbooks, if our kids are tired of the service they get why not give them something better?

It is clear to my that some radical change is needed within our system, government can do so much for us so come to our last line of defense towards our education, people that sit infront of pupils for 6 to 8 hours a day. I personally plead with them that now is the time to change, now is the time show us that teaching us is enjoyable and fine, now is the time to say Teaching as a career is nothing to be taken for granted, and I can promise you all that the next fight we fight as South Africans is giving teachers the proper recognition and acknowledgement you all deserve, We know there are teachers out there who go all out to help pupils and students and we grateful humble with your works and as the Young Minds ZA we salute you.
